bTrade - Here's to 35 Years! - Blog 1

This year marks an important anniversary for bTrade – 35 years!

The company was founded by two former IBMers from the VAN and EDI world.  They discovered a way to help customers save a tremendous amount of money by compressing all data exchanged through the VAN.  This led to the creation of TDCompress in 1990.

Being forward thinkers, they quickly realized the security implications of data being stolen or ending up in the wrong hands, so they added proprietary compression technology that’s still used today and directly competes with PGP encryption.  A few years later, they saw the need not only to compress and encrypt data but also to securely send and receive it—thus, TDAccess was born.  Modernized versions of these applications are still being used by our customers who started using them back in the 1990s. These versions support a variety of protocols and can be operated on the z-Series, i-Series, Linux, and Windows.  Since inception, both products have offered a fully functional and easy-to-use UI (a legacy that we still carry across all our products) and can be scripted via the command line interface.

As bTrade and our customers grew, we realized the need for a centralized Managed File Transfer solution instead of point-to-point transfers accomplished through TDAccess-like applications. TDNgine was born, supporting all the necessary security, audit, and compliance features in addition to offering a lightweight architecture that allowed it to process millions of file transfers per day while running on modest infrastructure.  Since many bTrade customers were already using TDAccess, it was only natural to add functionality allowing the quick migration of their configurations to the more advanced TDNgine.  This functionality is still carried forward by our state-of-the-art Managed File Transfer solution, TDXchange.

I was fortunate enough to join bTrade in 2002, coming from Verizon Business Services.  I was immediately struck by the high-performance, creative, and collaborative culture of the company, where customers’ needs were put ahead of anything else.  This fostered high retention of customers and the ability to deliver quality solutions quickly and efficiently.  I still work with many of those customers I met during that time, and one of those customers from a global investment bank became our CTO.

As we mark this important anniversary, I want to thank all of our customers for putting their trust in our company and our solutions, and we look forward to another 35 years of serving your data security needs!

During this 35th anniversary year, we will be reminiscing and sharing additional bTrade stories in upcoming blog posts.  So please stay tuned.
